Moulding ‘Elen of the Ways’ as a land artist for Medicine Festival. She was sprouting as I was creating, natures intervention with my own. Elen is one of the oldest goddess spirits of Celtic Britain, she is a deer deity, walker between humanity and nature, she is a way pointer, she points to the journey rather than the destination, she is the spirit of pilgrimage and teaches the art of noticing. Foraging most of the materials and making my own cob for the first time, returning most material back to the land afterwards and spending days in a state of silence and creation was a pretty profound experience for me.
I knew I would find the perfect pieces of wood and I found them within my first 5 minutes of foraging in the woodlands. This four day making process truly felt like a meditation, being in creative flow and the spirit of nature and Elen revealing itself throughout. Making and surviving through extreme heat, high winds and misty drizzle. Even the destruction process felt right somehow, giving the foraged cob and seeds and branches back into the land. I am excited to use natural materials more and use cob again which felt soo good to squelch.
